Angelica archangelica (Linn.)  This species is believed to be a native of Syria, from where it spread to many cool European climates and became naturalized.  Angelica grows in well-watered mountain ravines, river banks and damp meadows from sea level to altitudes of 5,900 to 8,000 feet.  It likes cold, shady, moist conditions with temperature from 5 to 19 degrees C. with an annual rainfall of 0.5 to 1.3 meters and a soil pH of 4.5 to 7.3.  Although angelica likes the previously mentioned growing conditions it is a wonderfully hardy plant that can with stand adverse conditions such as severe winter cold.  It can also develop and flower during conditions of summer drought if sheltered by trees and bushes.  If angelica is under cultivation it is best to protect it from either extremes of the environment.  In most of Europe it has been wild crafted almost to extinction.  Now the majority of the plants are carefully cared for in parks or home gardens and indoors in pots.  It has adapted to the cool moist lands of Scotland, Lapland and Iceland.  It has been traced to the British Isles in the late 1500's.  It also spread to China and the Indian sub-continent and came into wide spread use there.
