The parts used are the roots and leaves. The root is much stronger than the leaves. According to The School of Natural Healing, the general dosages for comfrey are as follows:

Decoction 2 fluid ounces three times daily.

Fluid extract ˝-2 teaspoonfuls.

Infusion 1 cupful, 3 times daily.

Powder 2 #00 capsules or 1 teaspoonful

Tincture ˝-1 teaspoonful (fluid teaspoon)

Some other well known dosages and applications for comfrey over the centuries are:

In Jethro Kloss’s Back to Eden, he said, “The best remedy for bloody urine.” He was referring to comfrey. Jethro Kloss suggests applying “[…] a fomentation wrung out of the strong hot tea for bad bruises, swellings, sprains, fractures: it will greatly reduce the swelling and relieve the pain. Also use a fomentation on boils.” (Back to Eden Jethro Kloss 121)

There is a recommendation to use comfrey leaf tea internally and as a wash over the area for torn, puffy or soreness around the birthing area. They also recommend drinking 3 cups of BF&C or comfrey leaf tea daily after the doctor has set a broken bone. (Every Womans’s Herbal by Dr. John R. Christopher and Cathy Gileadi 81, 161)
