Milk thistle is an effective plant remedy for many types of liver diseases.  Laboratory and clinical studies have found that it is a worthy remedy in the treatment of metabolic liver disease, acute viral hepatitis A, B and C, chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver and also fatty degeneration of the liver.  According to David Hoffmann, he suggests that the best results with using Milk thistle are found in toxic metabolic hepatitis and cirrhosis, in that it shortens the length of viral hepatitis, minimizes complications and also protects the liver against problems arising from surgery.  He writes, "This all goes to make it an excellent remedy to use in the prevention and treatments of many liver disorders.  The earlier treatment is commenced the better the prognosis but effective treatment is possible at virtually every stage." (28).

Because of the devastating effect of some drugs on the liver, it will be of great benefit if the individual took Milk thistle along with such medications.  Because of the ability of Milk thistle to cause cell regeneration it provides the liver and the body with the ability to cope with the harmful effects of daily life and its encounters with air, water and food toxins.  David Hoffmann comments, "Using Milk Thistle daily, and combining it with other hepatics, offers an effective and safe approach to liver protection." (29).

Among other qualities that Milk thistle has is that it is also useful for breaking and expelling gallstones, jaundice, splenic congestion, haemorrhages of the spleen and liver, and also uterine haemorrhage.  It has also been used as an anti-cancer agent, digestive tonic, to increase urine flow, dropsy and also melancholy (depression), vomiting of pregnancy, pelvic tension and also amenorrhoea.
