A tea of the inner-bark pieces is made by simmering one ounce in a pint of boiling water.  One cup is taken three to four times daily for acute conditions; for chronic conditions a half cup is taken three to four times daily.  Of the tincture 25-40 drops is taken three or more times daily.  The tea is used for slowing and inhibiting the growth of cancers and tumors and for skin diseases.

Capsules or tablets providing 300 mg of powdered bark can be taken.  Usually three capsules are ingested three times per day.

One-half to one cup bark and/or heartwood decoction taken orally 2-4 times daily. (Do not prepare an infusion/tea for this plant-it will not be as effective.) This decoction also is employed traditionally as a douche for yeast infections (use once daily for three consecutive days) and is used topically on the skin for skin fungi (such as nail fungus and athlete's foot).

Externally it was used as a poultice to treat skin disorders such as fungal infections and eczema.  A tea was brewed and drunk as a remedy for digestive disorders such as dysentery and colitis and for sore throats and fever.
