THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF BURDOCK
IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH BURDOCK
Being part Cherokee Indian, I have learned and resonate with the old saying that:  “Each tree, shrub and herb, down to even the grasses and mosses, agreed to furnish a remedy for some one of the diseases named and each said: ‘I shall appear to help man when he calls upon me in his need.’”.    For the healer who works with sacred plant medicine, it is important to be able to recognize the distinct spiritual identities of each plant which is used.  This understanding is then matched with the spiritual faced by the person who is ill.  The herb, or herbs, are brought into the healing process and their spirit invoked and introduced to the ill person.  If done properly the herbs will act as allies for the ill person during the healing crisis.  The plants are the friends of the human beings and they enjoy helping them.

Within each human being there is the capacity to communicate with all life, to understand the archetype that lives within.  The plants will share many of their healing properties, physical and spiritual, to one who listens.  First one learns about the plants and their sacred territory, how to relate to them and be honorable.  Then one learns how to prepare medicines from them, than how to understand disease and healing.  If there is doubt about what course to take or what plant to use you can pray and ask the plants for guidance. “

Burdock has never grown on my property for 15 yrs.  It started appearing at each door- front, side and back 2 yrs ago.  It was as if I felt it was trying to get my attention and to tell me to learn of it and use it.  I had started truly using herbs about 10 yrs ago and began studying them intensely, planting them from seed, taking them from the wild and inviting them to grow in my yard so I would have immediate access to them.  I made teas, capsules, tinctures, glycerites, oils, and eventually started making combinations of many different herbs for ailments for my family and self.   I used Burdock in tincture and capsule form for quite some time as a blood cleanser and purifier to calm the “liver fire or heat” as the Chinese call it, in myself.   I have seen it calm the redness in my facial skin.  I have seen my skin disturbances clear up almost completely and frequently recommend it in my line of work, as a wellness consultant, to others with skin disturbances like acne and eczema.   I have yet to use it in recipes like “Gobo” or cook the leaves or roots, but plan to do that this year.

As part of my Formulation assignment I used Burdock Root in 3 different forms; tincture, glycerite and as an oil for the dissolution of cysts which grow under the skin. It was used in combination with several other herbs for a synergistic effect.  During a 3 week course of taking the glycerite internally and the oil externally, 2 subjects noticed marked improvement of dissolution of the current cysts on their bodies. It seemed as if they were breaking down into smaller chunks but still present under the skin near the area they originally occurred.

I will always continue to use herbs, create new formulas with the knowledge that I have gained and add to my medicinal garden for the rest of my life.  The love of herbs has become woven into the very fiber of my being. Thank you for your part in this John R., David and Fawn Christopher, and for teaching me!
